UnityPoint Health inks AI partnership to accelerate discharges, triage hospital services

Hannah Mitchell -

UnityPoint Health-Des Moines (Iowa) and Qventus are partnering to use artificial intelligence to improve patient flow, the discharge process and triaging ancillary services.

The partnership will improve patients' experience by minimizing inconveniences and reducing wait times, according to a July 26 news release.

Four details:

1. Qventus uses AI to predict the expected discharge date and potential barriers to the predicted discharge day. It also triages ancillary services, such as physical therapy or dietitians.

2. The AI system will reduce the number of back-and-forth calls used to coordinate patient discharges and get hospital staff on the same page during discharge rounds and shift handoffs, the release said. It will also improve transparency surrounding when patients can expect to be discharged, the release said.

3. "It's challenging to keep track of where each patient is in the care process, and asking teams to work faster and harder is neither practical nor sustainable," said David Stark, president and CEO of UnityPoint Health-Des Moines. "To address these challenges, we've partnered with Qventus for real-time clinical operations. By making it easier for our care teams to consistently deliver a superior care experience from admission to discharge, we will enhance our reputation as the premier destination for care in the region."

4. UnityPoint Health-Des Moines has five hospitals in its region: Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Lutheran Hospital, Methodist West and Blank Children's Hospital, all in Des Moines, and Grinnell (Iowa) Regional Medical Center.
