Unencrypted laptop stolen from UCSF: 4 things to know

The University of California San Francisco began alerting individuals July 2 after a laptop belonging to a faculty member in the Cardiac Electrophysiology & Arrhythmia Services was reported stolen. The laptop contained personal health information.

Here are 4 things to know about the data breach.

1. UCSF said there is no evidence thus far of any attempts to access or use the information on the laptop.

2. In addition to notifying the individuals whose personal information was on the laptop, the California Department of Public Health has been alerted and a phone line has been established to provide assistance for affected individuals.

3. UCSF learned of the incident May 6 and notified police immediately.

4. An analysis of computer contents revealed the laptop may have contained the names, dates of birth, medical record numbers and health insurance ID numbers of 435 individuals.
