Survey: The 5 most useful sources of healthcare data

Jessica Kim Cohen -

In the fourth Insights Council Survey on Care Redesign, NEJM Catalyst asked healthcare executives, clinical leaders and clinicians to consider sources of healthcare data.

The 682 respondents were asked to identify what they considered the top three most useful sources of healthcare data.

Here are the five most frequently cited responses.

1. Clinical data: 95 percent

2. Cost data: 56 percent

3. Claims data: 45 percent

4. Patient-generated data: 30 percent

5. Pharmaceutical data: 25 percent

NEJM Catalyst also asked respondents to identify what they expect the top three most useful sources of healthcare data to be in five years. Although clinical data (82 percent) and cost data (58 percent) still took the first two slots, genomic data (40 percent) shot up to the third most frequently cited response with patient-generated data (40 percent). The fifth slot is taken by claims data (32 percent).
