Survey: Only 6% of healthcare providers report high level of interoperability

Interoperability between different EMR vendors has not been delivered in an effective way for healthcare providers, according to a KLAS report.

Here's what you need to know:

1. When asked about availability, 28 percent of providers said they always or often had reasonable access to EMR information from a different vendor.

2. When asked about availability of information and the ability to locate records, 13 percent of providers said finding records was automatic or simple.

3. When asked about availability of information, ability to locate records and their own EMR usage, only 8 percent of providers said EMR exchange between different vendors was well integrated into their workflow.

4. When asked about availability of information, ability to locate records, EMR incorporation into their workflow and impact on patient care, only 6 percent of providers said EMR exchange between different vendors had positively impacted patient care.

5. The vendors included in the study were Allscripts, athenahealth, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, Epic, GE Healthcare, Greenway Health, McKesson, MEDITECH and NextGen Healthcare.
