The healthcare industry is more vulnerable to data breaches and cyberattacks than other industries, according to a nationwide survey of almost 300 healthcare attorneys.
The survey, conducted by Bloomberg Law and the American Health Lawyers Association, found that more than nine in 10 healthcare attorneys believe the centralization of billing and insurance records, credit card information, medical records and social security numbers at healthcare facilities make the industry particularly attractive to cyber-attackers.

1. A total of 84 percent of healthcare attorneys reported being called on for issues of cybersecurity, including the evaluation of reporting obligations after security incidents and the development of relevant internal policies.
2. A total of 97 percent of healthcare attorneys said they expect their involvement in cybersecurity issues to increase over the next three years.
3. A total of 40 percent of healthcare attorneys felt their cyberattack plans were too generic and had not been adequately tested prior to an actual data breach.
4. One-third of healthcare attorneys reported that their cyberattack plans had not been updated to reflect the most recent types of cyberattacks or organizational changes.
