Survey: CISOs project cognitive security solutions will increase threefold by 2019

As data mining and machine learning gain traction, many hypothesize that self-learning technology will be integrated into various industries.

In particular, this cognitive technology is expected to take on a larger role in security systems, according to an IBM Institute for Business Value report, which surveyed 700 chief information security officers and security experts. The top benefits expected from a cognitive, self-learning security solution, according to the report, are improved intelligence, speed and accuracy; 57 percent of respondents said that cognitive security solutions would significantly slow the efforts of cybercriminals.

At present, CISOs and security experts report a few major barriers to implementing cognitive security solutions, including lack of skills, processes or methods competency (45 percent), lack of funding (28 percent) and lack of security operations, software and hardware infrastructure (25 percent). However, with recent advances in the field, respondents project a threefold increase in cognitive security solution implementation over the next two to three years.
