Survey: 74% of finance execs say interoperability will be 'extremely important' to value-based payments

Forty-one percent of hospital finance executives report their organization is "highly capable" or "extremely capable" in terms of interoperability, according to a Healthcare Financial Management Association survey.

For the survey, sponsored by health insurer Humana, HFMA polled 117 senior financial executives from hospitals nationwide about their organization's readiness for value-based payments. While almost half of respondents were confident in their hospital's interoperability capabilities, the survey also suggested the importance of data sharing will continue to rise during the next three years.

Here are the top five capabilities respondents said would become "extremely important" to value-based payments during the next three years.

1. Interoperability: 74 percent

2. Eligibility verification: 71 percent

3. Post-discharge follow-up care: 59 percent

4. Chronic care management: 55 percent

5. Real-time data access: 54 percent

5. Business intelligence: 54 percent
