IT professionals may be overconfident in their cybersecurity defenses, according to a report by Tripwire, a security and IT compliance solutions company. For the report, Tripwire commissioned a survey of 763 IT professionals, including 101 respondents from the healthcare industry.

The majority of IT professionals, 83 percent, said they could detect configuration changes to a network device within hours; however, 46 percent admitted they were unsure how long it would actually take. Similarly, 90 percent of health IT professionals said they could detect configuration changes to endpoint devices on the network within hours; however, 51 percent also admitted they were unsure how long it would actually take.

In reality, the time it takes to detect a cyberbreach varies; for example, 56 percent of data breaches impacting the healthcare sector took months to detect, according to Verizon's 2016 Data Breach Investigations Report, although the majority of the attacks occurred within minutes.
