Survey: 17 most valuable features of telemedicine platforms

Integrated audio and video for live patient engagement is the most valuable feature a telemedicine platform can possess, according to the 2017 U.S. Telemedicine Industry Benchmark Survey from Reach Health, a telemedicine software company.

The survey, conducted between December 2016 and January 2017, includes responses from 436 physicians, executives, nurses and other healthcare professionals throughout the country.

Here are the top 17 most valuable telemedicine platform features:

(Note: The number denotes the percentage of respondents who identified the feature as valuable or critical. Respondents could select more than one feature as valuable or critical.)

1. Integrated audio and video for live patient engagement: 94 percent

2. Ability to produce clinical documentation from each consultation: 84 percent

3. Support for standard devices, such as laptops and tablets, as clinical endpoints: 83 percent

4. Ability to send clinical documentation to/from your EMR: 83 percent

5. Ability for clinicians to communicate through HIPPA-compliant messaging: 79 percent

6. Ability to analyze telemedicine consultation data, to assess and improve performance: 79 percent

7. Ability for remote specialists and bedside clinicians to collaborate in consultations: 77 percent

8. Ability to access patient history directly from the telemedicine system: 74 percent

9. Ability to access picture archiving and communication system images (such as CT scans) directly from the telemedicine system: 73 percent

10. Browser-based system with no software to install or maintain: 73 percent

11. Ability to access lab and test results directly from the telemedicine system: 70 percent

12. Support for peripheral devices such as stethoscopes, otoscopes, etcetera: 63 percent

13. Store-and-Forward capabilities/Asynchronous: 62 percent

14. Physician scheduling: 61 percent

15. Specialized workflow and documentation for each specialty (separate from your EMR): 56 percent

16. Ability to configure the telemedicine display to accommodate individual clinician preferences: 52 percent
