Substance Abuse, Mental Health Group Awards Communities $4M for HIT

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has announced more than $4 million in grants for health information technology services in six communities across the United States.

The six awardees will receive up to $840,000 for their three-year HIT projects. The following is a list of the grant awardees and their grant amount:

• Buffalo Valley in Hohenwald, Tenn. — $840,000
• Iowa Department of Public Health in Des Moines — $838,200
• First Choice Services. in Charleston, W.Va. — $790,083
• Forest County Potawatomi Community in Crandon, Wis. — $840,000
• Irene Stacy Community Mental Health Center in Butler, Pa. — $718,547
• Promesa Behavioral Health in Fresno, Calif. — $840,000

The grant program aims to leverage technology to enhance and/or expand the capacity of substance abuse treatment providers to serve individuals who traditionally have been underserved because of lack of access. According to the release, grantees will use technology — web-based services, smart phones and behavioral health electronic applications — to support recovery and resiliency efforts and promote wellness.
