Study: Manual Phone Calls Reduced Patients’ Missed Appointments More Than Automated Reminders Did

Making manual phone call reminders to patients prior to their appointment was more effective in reducing nonattendance than sending automated reminders, according to a study published in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare.

Researchers conducted a literature review of 29 studies that involved nonattendance at hospital appointments. They found that sending reminders via manual phone calls, short message service or automated phone calls decreased missed appointments by 34 percent. Manual phone call reminders were most effective, reducing nonattendance by 39 percent, while automated reminders reduced nonattendance by 29 percent.
