Researchers conducted a literature review of 29 studies that involved nonattendance at hospital appointments. They found that sending reminders via manual phone calls, short message service or automated phone calls decreased missed appointments by 34 percent. Manual phone call reminders were most effective, reducing nonattendance by 39 percent, while automated reminders reduced nonattendance by 29 percent.
