Study Finds Hospitals Not Ready to Meet HITECH Act Requirements

A recent study commissioned by health IT vendor FairWarning found that nearly one third of the 200 hospitals polled said they are not ready to meet the privacy and security requirements of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, which went into effect on Feb. 17, according to a report by Washington Technology.

Requirements include disclosure reporting, privacy monitoring, the limited use of personal medical data for marketing and providing patients with electronic access to their health information, according to the report.

The inability of hospitals to meet the requirements by the deadline is likely due to the resources required for implementation, according to there report.

In addition to the new compliance requirements, hospitals and other medical providers also face new enforcement provisions and penalties related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which were included in the stimulus law, according to the report.
