State Department names former J&J exec new CIO: 3 notes

The U.S. Department of State appointed Stuart McGuigan permanent CIO, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Three notes:

1. As CIO, Mr. McGuigan leads the Bureau of Information Resource Management, which manages technology services for the State Department's various divisions.

"Every aspect of the department's information technology capabilities and operations now falls under [Mr. McGuigan's] oversight, including architecture, infrastructure, cybersecurity, data management, software and application development and acquisition," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in remarks read by an agency spokesperson, according to the report.

2. Previously, Mr. McGuigan served as Johnson & Johnson's CIO for seven years. At Johnson & Johnson, he oversaw the company's efforts to shift to a cloud-based network. He is also former CIO of CVS Caremark.

3. Mr. McGuigan succeeds Frontis Wiggins, who left the department in December 2017, as CIO. Karen Mummaw, a member of the senior foreign service, served as the department's acting CIO in the interim.
