Stamford Podiatry breach affects 40,000+ patients

Stamford (Conn.) Podiatry Group is notifying patients of an incidence of unauthorized access in its computer systems, which may have compromised personal information.

In a breach notification letter, the group reported "unauthorized persons with unknown and potentially malicious intent" accessed its computer systems between Feb. 22 and April 14, which included access to the EHR system. "Although we have not been able to confirm that your personal information was accessed and copied, we have not been able to rule out that possibility," according to the letter. Stamford Podiatry learned of the breach April 14.

SC Magazine reports the breach affects 40,491 individuals.

Potentially compromised information includes names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, gender, marital status, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, names of treating and referring physicians, insurance information, medical history and treatment information.

Stamford Podiatry has completed a forensic review and is implementing additional security measures.
