St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, N.Y., has reported a data breach after discovering a thumb drive potentially containing protected health information was stolen.
According to the hospital, somebody entered a restricted area of the hospital and stole the thumb drive Oct. 31, 2015.
A hospital investigation determined some patients' names, medical record numbers, dates of service, types of imaging received and administrative information may have been contained on the thumb drive. No Social Security numbers or electronic medical information were contained on the drive.
St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital's breach notification does not explicitly state how many individuals were affected by this breach, saying only the thumb drive may have contained limited health information for "some" patients. According to the HHS Office for Civil Right's breach notification portal, St. Luke's Cornwall notified the agency Dec. 30, 2015, and said 29,156 individuals were affected.
