Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, Vermont IT Leaders build data exchange interfaces

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington and Burlington-based Vermont Information Technology Leaders, a group of IT leaders assisting healthcare organizations in IT implementation, have built data exchange interfaces that allow the hospital to transmit data to the Vermont health information exchange.

SVMC can now send immunization data, patient demographics, radiology reports, pathology reports, microbiology reports, blood bank information and transcribed reports to the VHIE. The SVMC connection completes the VITL’s goal of connecting all 14 Vermont hospitals to the VHIE, according to a news release.

Although the hospital has contributed lab results to the VHIE for eight years, the new connections will increase the amount of clinical and demographic data available to providers. The SVMC interface project included a move-in process where engineers, analysts and project managers met face-to-face at the VITL office to work out the details, according to the news release.

“Southwestern Vermont Medical Center has been a part of the VHIE for over eight years, and we have actively used the data network to distribute electronic lab results to primary care practices in the southwestern Vermont health care service area,” said Rich Ogilvie, SVMC CIO. “The additional connections deliver data and reporting abilities that will enhance the provider-patient care relationship in the Bennington service area and across the state.”
