Broomfield, Colo.-based SCL Health and PeriGen, a digital health company that uses artificial intelligence to enhance childbirth safety, are partnering to deploy an AI-powered obstetrics command center systemwide.
Four notes:
- The hub is used by labor and delivery clinicians to monitor maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate, contractions and labor progression for patients, according to an Oct. 26 news release.
- The hub will consolidate up to 12 hours of monitoring information onto one screen. Clinicians will be able to refer to the command center to quickly evaluate trends. Current electronic fetal monitoring systems require nurses to track and document as many as 10 characteristics every 15 to 30 minutes, according to the release.
- The command center was piloted in SCL's Denver hospital for six months. The health system is now expanding it to eight hospital locations.
- "Given the demands on [labor and delivery] clinicians and our geographically dispersed locations, we recognized the value of implementing a virtual 'second set of eyes' to actively monitor maternal and fetal conditions," said Deb Lowery, director of women's and children's services at SCL Health. "Being able to visualize the trends in the fetal heart rate patterns, maternal vital signs and the progression of labor assists the nurse working in the OB Hub in determining if there is a strip that warrants a more focused look at the bedside."
