Approximately seven months ago, Samsung was notified of a security vulnerability on its Samsung Galaxy devices, yet the vulnerability has not been addressed. This presents a security issue for hospitals with bring your own device programs, as any protected health information being communicated on the phones is at risk of being breached, according to a HIPAA Journal report.
The vulnerability stems from the keyboard software. Hackers can gain access to the phone while the keyboard software is being updated. Hackers can potentially view information sent or entered into the phones.
For hospitals with BYOD programs, this presents a heightened privacy violation risk. According to the report, even one of these phones using a secure messaging app could still be hacked.
