Russian hacker arrested for LinkedIn data breach

Czech police acting on behalf of the FBI and the International Criminal Police Organization, or INTERPOL, arrested a Russian citizen associated with the 2012 data breach of Mountain View, Calif.-based LinkedIn. The breach affected 117 million user credentials, according to Engadget.

In 2012, hackers accessed LinkedIn and reportedly stole 6.5 million passwords. In May 2016, LinkedIn learned an additional data set containing more than 100 million credentials was stolen from the initial breach and was being sold on the black market.

Police caught the man, who remains unnamed, in Prague on Oct. 5. A Czech police report claimed the man was arrested at a hotel near the center of the city.

Judicial authorities have yet to decide whether the man will face extradition to the U.S.
