Hospitals are required to not only capture data on 15 required quality measures but to also calculate and report results for all patients in order to achieve Stage 1 meaningful use of EHRs. However, only a third of the data needed for the hospital measures will be captured by EHRs.
Acquiring the remaining 65 percent will require additional physician documentation as well as electronic medication administration in hospitals and the emergency departments, which is a challenge because many emergency departments lack clinical technology.
