Seventy-three percent of executives are either researching or deploying Internet of Things projects, according to a Verizon report.

Here are five industries ranked by growth in Verizon IoT network connections between 2016 and 2017.

1. Manufacturing: 84 percent

2. Energy/utilities: 41 percent

3. Transportation/distribution: 40 percent

4. Smart cities/communities: 19 percent

5. Healthcare/pharmaceuticals: 11 percent

The report, titled "State of the Market: Internet of Things 2017," also noted most enterprise IoT projects are still in proof-of-concept or pilot phases and not yet in production. In the healthcare industry, these IoT projects center on applying tracking technologies to locate critical equipment within a healthcare facility or temperature monitoring to track medications from production to patient.

"Healthcare manufacturers are changing the way they manage vehicle fleets and track and locate high-cost drugs and specialized equipment," the report reads. "Sensors and IoT connectivity are working to increase equipment visibility, accountability, security and convenience."
