Report: Accidental disclosure of sensitive documents drives 42% of healthcare breaches

Healthcare experienced the highest increase in ransomware demands compared to other industries, rising 133 percent during the first half of 2017, according to Beazley report.

For the report, Beazley — a London-based cybersecurity insurance company with offices in Asia, Australia, Middle East, South America and the United States — analyzed 1,330 incidents the company helped clients address in the first half of 2017.

Here are the top five causes of data breaches in healthcare.

1. Unintended disclosure: 42 percent

2. Hack or malware: 18 percent

3. Insider: 14 percent

4. Physical or non-electronic record loss: 8 percent

5. Portable device: 6 percent

The report also noted 8 percent of healthcare breaches had unknown causes.
