The Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity, which President Barack Obama established earlier this year, has released its final report.
The report, which focuses on cybersecurity measures to secure and grow the nation's digital economy, suggests six imperatives, which contain a total of 16 recommendations and 53 action items for the incoming administration to consider.
Here are the six imperatives:
1. Protect, defend and secure today’s information infrastructure and digital networks. Action item suggestions include establishing a National Cybersecurity Private-Public Program forum to address cybersecurity issues and requiring employees, contractors and others accessing federal systems to use strong authentication.
2. Innovate and accelerate investment for the security and growth of digital networks and the digital economy. Action item suggestions include directing the Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team to develop guidelines for Internet of Things cybersecurity and directing the U.S. Department of Justice to lead an interagency study investigating how current law regards liability for harm caused by faulty Internet of Things devices.
3. Prepare consumers to thrive in a digital age. Action item suggestions include developing a cybersecurity "nutrition label" to help consumers assess technology products and launching a national cybersecurity awareness and engagement campaign, which would integrate perspectives from business, education, consumer and government leaders.
4. Build cybersecurity workforce capabilities. Action item suggestions include launching a national cybersecurity workforce program to train 100,000 new cybersecurity practitioners by 2020 and developing a training program to teach all executives about cybersecurity risk management.
5. Better equip government to function effectively and securely in the digital age. Action item suggestions include consolidating cybersecurity and infrastructure protection under a single federal agency and issuing a National Cybersecurity Strategy.
6. Ensure an open, fair, competitive and secure global digital economy. Action item suggestions include appointing an Ambassador for Cybersecurity to work on cybersecurity strategies and practices with the international community and directing NIST and the Department of State to introduce international partners to the United States' Cybersecurity Framework.
