Police investigating Google Paris for tax evasion

Staff -

French police raided Google's Paris headquarters Tuesday as the government continues investigations in the tech company for corruption and tax fraud, reports Reuters.

European governments have criticized Google for positioning itself and operating in such a way that minimizes the taxes they pay, according to the report. For its part, Google pays few taxes in many European countries because it finalizes contracts and reports the majority of its sales in Ireland through its Dublin staff, according to the report.

"The investigation aims to verify whether Google Ireland Ltd has a permanent base in France and if, by not declaring parts of its activities carried out in France, it failed its fiscal obligations, including on corporate tax and value added tax," according to the financial prosecutors office, Reuters reports.

A spokesman for Google in Europe told Reuters the company is cooperating with the authorities. "We comply full with French law," he said in the report.
