Pennsylvania Senate Passes Data Breach Notification Bill

The Pennsylvania Senate has unanimously passed a bill requiring state agencies to notify those affected by a data breach, including patients, within a week of its occurrence, according to a Pennsylvania Independent report.

The legislation also requires state and local agencies involved in a breach to notify the state Office of Administration or the local district attorney within three days. These agencies will then decide if the situation warrants further criminal investigation.

A similar bill was passed by the Senate in the last session but was not taken up in the House. The House plans to consider the new bill in this session, according to the report.
