PCAST Workgroup Suggests Implementing Exchange Language in Phases

The PCAST Workgroup committee members expressed some doubt at the possibility of establishing a "universal exchange language" by 2013, according to a Health Data Management news report.

Last December, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology recommended the creation of a universal exchange language that would be used to promote health information exchange. However, due to a lack of real-world examples of how a universal exchange language would be established and operated in healthcare communities, the PCAST Workgroup said implementing such a universal structure would be more feasible if launched in incremental phases.

The PCAST Workgroup recommended stage 2 metrics that would promote use of patient portals, increase patient access to their health information and the option to receive an electronic copy of their health record using tagged data elements, according to the news report. The workgroup has also recommended the ONC use stage 2 EHR certification criteria to apply metadata tags to other stage 2 applications.
