Patient mental health records found in Georgia dumpster

Staff -

Last week, CBS46 News uncovered hundreds of patient records in a dumpster outside East Point, Ga.-based South Fulton Mental Health Center.

The records, some of which dated back more than 10 years ago, were all from patients of SFMHC. They contained patients' names, addresses, Social Security numbers, phone numbers, symptoms, medications and psychiatrists' notes from appointments.

CBS46 News reported the records to Fulton County, which immediately launched an investigation.

On Feb. 10, Fulton County officials confirmed they had identified one employee responsible for dumping the records, according to CBS46 News. Spokesperson Darryl Carver said the disposal was "done on purpose" and the employee responsible was immediately placed on leave.

In the most recent story development, Fulton County officials suggested the employee responsible was angry about the county's plan to outsource mental health services, according to CBS46 News.
