Patient engagement via mobile health?

In a recent report released by peer60, it was concluded that patient engagement needs to make a shift into mobile health. With over 182 million Americans owning smartphones as of December 2014, according to comScore1, smartphones gain an ever-increasing role within American life.

For their report, Peer60 gathered data on mobile health, or mHealth, from hospital and healthcare vendor leaders such as, athenahealth, SCI Solutions, Cerner, Epic, Optum, Allscripts and more. It was indicated in the report that 90 percent of these 257 company CMIOs, CMOs, marketing managers and patient access leaders see that "...smartphone technology is important in the effort to successfully engage patients in their own care."

According to peer60's CEO, Jeremy Bikman, "The world has gone mobile, and healthcare technology is going mobile with it. Software vendors, with patient-focused solutions, who adapt their systems to work elegantly on mobile devices will see increased market share in the coming months and years."

And there is a great deal of room for growth within this market:

  • Only 21 percent of hospitals have patient engagement technology
  • 12 percent plan to purchase in one of these engagement options this year
  • And only 14 percent of respondents have specified that they do not plan to get smartphone-based patient engagement solutions
