Oregon's Dunes Family Health Care Posts Notice of Data Breach

Dunes Family Health Care, based in Reedsport, Ore., has issued a notice of a data breach, which may have affected an undisclosed number of current and former patients of the family health clinic, according to a news release.

On March 11, 2011, the organization maintaining the clinic's back-up electronic files discovered that the external hard drive on which those files were stored was missing. The apparent theft was reported to the police and they are still investigating the matter with the help of the Oregon State Crime Lab. The hard drive was stored in a locked, fire-protected building with very limited access.

Many of the stolen files contained patients' Social Security numbers and other personal information. Other files did not include SSNs but may have included a name, date of birth, address or clinical information.

Dunes Family Health Care will be providing identity theft services to current and former patients who have been affected by this incident. Patient files are now encrypted and being stored under increased physical security.
