One month of Cerner: 7 company updates

Staff -

From new contracts to climbing revenues to receiving one of the biggest federal IT contracts ever, it has been a busy month for Cerner.

Here are seven company updates from the vendor.

1. Cerner was awarded a new contract to provide its EHR platform to three health systems in Vancouver, Canada. The contract bid for the Clinical & Systems Transformation Project was originally awarded to IBM, who had been working on the project for several years. However, the project was riddled with issues, and project leaders reevaluated and decided to select a new vendor.

2. Cerner integrated NARxCHECK into its EHR to help combat prescription drug abuse. NARxCHECK is an analytics solution offering real-time insights to assist providers when making prescription decisions for controlled substances.

3. Coral Gables-based Baptist Health South Florida selected Cerner's EHR and population health management platforms to integrate across the system's hospitals, physician offices and outpatient locations. Baptist Health already uses Cerner's Soarian Financials revenue cycle management solutions.

4. The Department of Defense awarded Cerner, Leidos and Accenture's team the contract to overhaul the military health system's records. The 10-year, $4.3 billion contract requires the team to build a brand new health record system for 9.5 million active and retired military members receiving health services at approximately 1,000 sites worldwide.

5. Cerner's Q2 2015 financials presented a mixed bag of gains and losses. For the three months ended July 4, the vendor posted $1.13 billion in revenue, a 32 percent increase from the previous year's $851.76 million. Additionally, bookings reached an all-time high of $1.29 billion. During the same time period last year, Cerner's bookings were $1.08 billion. However, net earnings slid 11 percent from $129 million during the second quarter last year to $115 million for the second quarter this year.

6. Cerner has started construction on a new Kansas City, Mo., campus. Named the Trails Campus, this will be Cerner's seventh location in Kansas City. The new campus occupies 290 acres and 4.7 million square feet of space in 16 buildings. The two newest office buildings are expected to be complete by the end of 2016.

7. The company introduced a new tool to help detect the risk of patient falls. A patient affixes a wearable to his or her wrist and walks around a physician's office or the hospital halls for 10 minutes. The tool uses mathematical models and time series analyses to calculate a personalized assessment of the patient and the fall risk. Cerner says the EHR-agnostic tool identifies fall-risk with 90 percent accuracy.
