ONC unveils $180k data challenge

Jessica Kim Cohen -

ONC on April 6 launched a new data challenge, titled "Oh, the Places Data Goes: Health Data Provenance." In total, ONC is offering $180,000 in prizes.

The challenge asks participants to develop an IT solution that tracks data provenance for each update and exchange event. Data provenance refers to information about the data, including when the data was created and by whom, along with whether it was altered during electronic exchange, according to an ONC blog post. The goal is to identify errors and ensure quality.

The first phase of the project asks participants to submit white paper proposals by May 22. The white paper must describe a research team's current capabilities to demonstrate provenance of health data, along with a barrier they have faced. Up to four winners will each receive $20,000 and move on to the second phase of the challenge.

The second phase asks these winners to develop a prototype and pilot solution that addresses the problem they identified in phase one. In the second phase, these participants will submit a recorded demonstration and solution guide by Jan. 22. The first place winner will receive $60,000 and the second place winner will received $40,000.
