At the institute's Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research Center, Dr. Heller will develop techniques and instruments to diagnosis and examine early signs of cancer. In the past two years, the research center has hired more than 20 people for engineering, biology, informatics and computer science roles, according to Portland Business Journal.

At UC San Diego, Dr. Heller established a bioengineering and nanobiology laboratory and developed biochips that analyze blood for bioindicators of cancer, Portland Business Journal reports. Prior, he co-founded and served as chief technology officer of the diagnostics company Nanogen.
