Office of the National Coordinator to Set Up Governance Rules for Nationwide Health Information Network

The Office of the National Coordinator will be establishing governance rules for a nationwide health information network, according to a report by Government Health IT.

By establishing rules on the NHIN, the ONC hopes to put legal and policy questions to rest so that healthcare organizations and information exchange providers can expand the exchange of health information.

The new rules will also lift certain restrictions to allow organizations and firms without an existing contract or grant with the federal government to participate in NHIN Exchange, a group of organizations pioneering health information exchange using the NHIN that includes the Veterans Affairs and Defense departments. As of now, only organizations that have contracts or grants with the federal government can participate in the NHIN Exchange.

The ONC is projected to propose the new rules in early 2011 and finalize it that summer.
