Northwell develops app to track pediatric patients' growth

Jackie Drees -

New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health launched an application that allows caregivers to track a premature baby's growth and development without disrupting EHR workflows, according to a Jan. 28 news release.

Northwell created the app using Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources, a standard for EHR data sharing.

The app was built on InterSystems' health software platform and is based on Boston Children's Hospital FHIR app.

Using the app, clinicians can monitor key health indicators such as weight and height over time across different providers and facilities. Data collected from the patient's initial care at birth at the hospital is stored on the same platform as information recorded during outpatient visits or other appointments and/or hospital stays.

"The ability to have appropriate growth parameters for all infants has minimized the need to use multiple websites and paper documentation for these babies," said Deborah Mensch, MD, chief medical information officer at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, a member of Northwell Health. "Monitoring growth in premature infants is critical to their care, and this tool has eased the burden on our front-line clinicians."
