New Study Demonstrates Feasibility of 3D Holographic Imaging in Interventional Cardiology

A pilot study has shown it is possible to use a live 3D holographic visualization to guide minimally invasive interventional cardiology procedures.

The study, conducted by Royal Philips and RealView Imaging at Schneider Children’s Medical Center in Israel, allowed physicians on the interventional team to view a detailed, 3D image of the patient’s heart projected into empty space, in addition to viewing the heart on a 2D screen. The physicians were also able to manipulate the projected heart image by reaching out and touching it.

“The holographic projections enabled me to intuitively understand and interrogate the 3D spatial anatomy of the patient’s heart, as well as to navigate and appreciate the device-tissue interaction during the procedure,” said Einat Birk, MD, pediatric cardiologist and director of the Institute of Pediatric Cardiology at Schneider Children’s, in a news release.
