New ransomware variant encourages cybervictims to pass along the virus

Jessica Kim Cohen -

The security researchers MalwareHunterTeam have discovered a new type of ransomware, according to The Guardian.

Popcorn Time, like traditional ransomware, encrypts the files of infected users; victims gain access to the decryption key to unlock their files after providing a payment to the cyberattackers. However, in an effort to encourage the spread of the virus, Popcorn Time offers another option: if the infected user sends a link to the malware to two or more people who install the file and pay, the cybercriminals say they will unlock the original user's files for free.

Popcorn Time is only in development; but once released, researchers expect it to rapidly spread, according to The Guardian.
