Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando has expanded its telemedicine program to the nurses' office of local Morning Star Catholic School, a school for special needs students, according to Orlando Sentinel.
Nemours Children's Hospital launched its pediatric telemedicine program, called CareConnect, roughly a year ago. In this school-based pilot program, nurses are able to use a video monitor to call in both a hospital pediatrician and a child's parent.
Although Nemours Children's Hospital hopes to roll out CareConnect in other local schools, one major barrier is insurance, since Florida does not reimburse for virtual physician visits, according to Orlando Sentinel.
At present, Morning Star Catholic School pays for the telemedicine program with a grant, so that care is free for parents.
