Most health IT leaders taking on more responsibility but lack resources: Report

The vast majority of health IT leaders say the job is significantly different than it was five years ago and they have taken on more responsibilities as a result, according to a survey of 224 hospital and health system executives by payment software company Flywire.

Here are eight things to know from the Dec. 7 report:

1. Ninety-four percent of leaders said the job is more complex than it was in 2017.

2. Eighty-eight percent said they have taken on responsibilities outside their role as it is traditionally defined.

3. Ninety-two percent said they think a lot about business outcomes, though more than half said they are not receiving the resources to meet those responsibilities.

4. The top EHR challenges include integration with other systems (55 percent), cybersecurity (45 percent) and staffing issues (38 percent).

5. Ninety percent said they are being measured against patient collection metrics.

6. Eighty-six percent said they expect their role in improving patient experience — through tools such as data analytics and artificial intelligence — will be greater in five years.

7. Sixty-seven percent said IT is the department most responsible for payment security.

8. Ninety-six percent said one of the best parts of the job is that it helps people.
