Mississippi hospital launches digital system to educate patients on prescription medications

Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson launched a digital patient engagement system that aims to decrease hospital readmission rates by helping teach patients about their prescription medications prior to being discharged.

MBMC partnered with TeleHealth Services, a patient engagement and education technology provider, to install an internet protocol television system as well as network-based TVs throughout its 639-bed facility. The TVs provide multimedia content geared toward teaching the patient about their prescription medications and the hospital's onsite pharmacy.

Patients can sift through the content showcased by the TVs, and the hospital's nurses are automatically notified of what videos the patient views. Education options include self-pick-up at the pharmacy after discharge as well as prescription delivery to the patient's bedside. The telehealth system also allows patients to ask questions about their medications such as their side effects or purpose for treatment, which alerts hospital support staff that monitor the requests.
