Microsoft joins 100-member open source blockchain community

Mackenzie Garrity -

Microsoft is the latest technology company to join the Hyperledger community for open source blockchain projects, the company announced in a blog post June 18, according to VentureBeat.

More than 100 members participate in the Hyperledger community, including IBM, JPMorgan Chase, Salesforce and Intel. The Hyperledger is overseen by the Linux Foundation.

"Enterprises and startups have gone beyond the technology's digital currency roots to build more business-oriented blockchain applications that leverage a mix of networks, both public and private," Azure Blockchain engineering program manager Marley Gray said. "We believe that developing standards and open specifications, as well as collaborating on implementations of them, is critical to removing customer blockers and accelerating blockchain as a mainstream technology."

Microsoft released its blockchain in May, known as Azure Blockchain Service. In 2018, the company launched a blockchain workbench and developer kits.
