Microsoft India rebrands AI eye care network following step into cardiology

Microsoft has renamed its Microsoft Intelligent Network for Eyecare as part of the company's move to apply artificial intelligence across multiple medical specialties, the company announced March 8.

Microsoft India launched the Microsoft Intelligent Network for Eyecare with L V Prasad Eye Institute, an eye care provider in Hyderabad, India, in late 2016. The network brings together commercial, research and academic institutions to investigate applications of AI to reduce rates of avoidable blindness and scale eye care services worldwide.

The consortium, now dubbed the AI Network for Healthcare, recently expanded into cardiac care through a partnership with Chennai, India-based Apollo Hospitals. Under the consortium's expanded mission, Microsoft and Apollo will work together to develop machine learning models that predict patients' risk for heart disease and recommend care management plans.

The AI Network for Healthcare is part of Healthcare NExT, an initiative Microsoft rolled out in early 2017 to integrate AI and cloud computing advancements into the healthcare industry.

"Cardiac disease is amongst India's leading causes of mortality and morbidity, which is exacting a toll on the health and well-being of our citizens," said Sangita Reddy, joint managing director of Apollo Hospitals. "While we commence this in India, we will validate the algorithms and work towards creating a global consortium to tackle multiple conditions in cardiovascular disease."
