Microsoft discontinues Band wearable, health dashboard apps

Microsoft plans to shutdown support May 31 for its Health Dashboard applications and services, including those for the wearable device Microsoft Band.

Microsoft ended sales of the Band in 2016, but the company has kept Band apps running to support existing users, the Verge reports.

Existing Band users can export their data using tools on Microsoft's website until May 31, when all data in the Microsoft Health Dashboard will be deleted. The Band will also operate with limited functionality and capabilities provided by the cloud or app will no longer function.

Active users and individuals that have a band covered under limited warranty will be eligible to receive a refund. Refunds for Microsoft's Band 1 will be processed at $79.99, and Band 2 will be $175.

Fitbit recently reported struggle in the wearables market, with its company shares dropping 12 percent Feb. 27. Competition in the marketplace continues to heat up as more tech giants like AT&T and Samsung launch wearables and smartwatches.
