MGMA urges Dr. Tom Price to simplify health IT regulations

The Medical Group Management Association is urging new HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD, to mitigate regulatory burden, particularly with respect to health IT.

The letter notes that one of the goals of HIPAA was to decrease "the burdensome and costly administrative overhead experienced when providers and health plans interact." However, the government has not put forward several critical standards necessary to reduce administrative cost, and thus the MGMA asks Dr. Price to engage directly with medical groups to identify appropriate administrative standards.

The association also notes that regulations surrounding the Medicare and Medicaid Meaningful Use EHR Incentive Program are excessive and have "caused extreme frustration for physicians caring for patients." In particular, the MGMA urges the ONC to delay any requirement regarding the move to the 2015 Edition of certified electronic health record technology and offer more flexibility in certification standards.

In the letter, the association also attached an addendum that includes additional opportunities to mitigate burdensome rules.
