Medtronic acquires AI-enabled analytics software company

Andrea Park -

Medtronic has completed its acquisition of Klue, a company developing behavior-tracking software to track food consumption, the devicemaker announced Dec. 17.

The acquisition is expected to be neutral to earnings per share in fiscal year 2020, according to the announcement. Further terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Klue's operating system uses activity trackers and analytics technology in conjunction with artificial intelligence software to detect when a user is eating a meal and provide real-time insights into eating behaviors. The system is expected to be integrated into Medtronic's Personalized Closed Loop insulin pump system, which is currently in development and will provide personalized and continuously updating automated insulin delivery to simplify and improve diabetes management.

The Klue acquisition comes one year after Medtronic finalized its purchase of Nutrino Health, which uses AI to automatically analyze nutrition as food is consumed and is also being integrated into the PCL system.
