Medtronic acquires AI company Digital Surgery

Andrea Park -

Medtronic announced on Feb. 13 the acquisition of Digital Surgery, a British company developing artificial intelligence, data analytics and digital education and training software for computerized surgery.

With the acquisition, Medtronic will integrate Digital Surgery's AI- and data-driven techniques into its laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery technologies. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Digital Surgery is the latest in a string of AI-centric acquisitions for Medtronic: In December, for example, the healthcare technology company completed its purchase of Klue, which develops automated behavior-tracking software to monitor food consumption.
