Washington D.C.-based MedStar Health is partnering with Bethesda, N.Y.-based tech start-up firm, Mytonomy, to create a new software platform through which to educate patients, according to Digital Journal.

With the help of Mytonomy's technology, MedStar plans to expand its pilot program for cardiovascular patients across all of its facilities. Out of 300 patients scheduled for heart surgery who completed the modules included in the pilot program, 90 percent reported feeling less anxious and more engaged, confident and satisfied with their medical experience, according to the article.

Hospital officials said they will be adding additional learning modules to the software to inform patients of other types of procedures, including procedures in obstetrics and gastroenterology, according to the article.

"Engaging patients as active partners in their care is an essential aspect of achieving better outcomes and improving chances for long-term health," says Stephen Evans, MD, MedStar Health's CMO. "Giving patients the information and tools to manage their care needs becomes more important than ever when the measure of health is viewed across a person's life, not in episodic encounters with a hospital."
