McKesson considers selling IT unit

Staff -

A sale or merger may be in the cards for McKesson's IT unit as the company faces pricing pressure from its main drug-distribution business, reports The Wall Street Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter."

McKesson's IT unit reported $2.9 billion in sales and a $519 million operating profit for the fiscal year that ended in March. However, McKesson reported $188 billion in sales and a $3.6 billion operating profit in its drug-distribution business for that same time period.

According to WSJ, companies are increasingly narrowing their business focuses on their core units, especially when profit margins on ancillary businesses differ so drastically.

McKesson is just considering options right now, according to the sources.
