A team of researchers led by Bradley Erickson, MD, PhD, is one of five finalists for NVIDIA's 2017 Global Impact Award, according to a NVIDIA blog post.
Dr. Erickson, a neuroradiologist at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, is using artificial intelligence to predict brain tumor genomics. The research team trained a deep learning neural network with MRIs of various tumors. Their goal is to develop a network that can predict how fast a tumor will grow and its potential response to treatment.
"It's always been a dream to use computers to help with tumor image interpretation, but the technology wasn't there," Dr. Erickson said, according to the blog post.
Through the Global Impact Award, NVIDIA provides grant funding totaling $150,000 to research teams using the company's technology. The 2017 Global Impact Award winners will be announced at the GPU Technology Conference, May 8 to May 11, in San Jose, Calif.
