Mayo Clinic, AliveCor use mHealth to screen for cardiac death

Jessica Kim Cohen -

AliveCor joined forces with Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic to develop an IT solution to screen for long QT syndrome, a heart rhythm disorder that often leads to sudden cardiac death.

AliveCor develops personal electrocardiogram technologies that apply machine learning to improve traditional ECG analysis. The collaboration will integrate Mayo Clinic's patented algorithms into AliveCor's portable Kardia Mobile ECG monitor to enable early detection of long QT syndrome without visiting a hospital or physician's office.

"This agreement makes our vision of universal screening for the early detection of long QT syndrome — a potentially lethal, yet highly treatable condition — one step closer to reality," said Michael J. Ackerman, MD, PhD, director of Mayo Clinic's Windland Smith Rice Sudden Death Genomics Laboratory. "Any of these deaths could be averted with simple preventive and/or counteractive measures."
