Boynton Beach, Fla.-based LifeMD has cinched a contract with the Los Angeles Unified School District, according to the Sun Sentinel.
Through the contract, LifeMD will provide telemedicine services to the school district's 640,000 students across 900 schools.
Here are four things to know about the contract.
1. LifeMD will install telemedicine units in phases. The first phase will begin in mid-September, according to the report. Each unit costs between $25,000 and $60,000. The total number of units was not disclosed in the Sun Sentinel report.
2. These units can be utilized in non-emergency situations. If a student has a non-emergency medical situation, he or she can visit the school nurse, who will examine the student in the unit. The medical information will then be sent to a LifeMD physician, who will conduct a virtual visit with the student, the nurse and the child's parent, who has the option of joining the visit online. The session is recorded, so if the parent isn't available, he or she can view the session online later.
3. The telemedicine program is available to all students, regardless of insurance status. Whether students are insured, uninsured or underinsured, they can receive LifeMD's care. To use the services, students simply have to have a signed parental consent form. When an insured student utilizes services, their insurer is billed. But when an uninsured student uses services, LifeMD will cover the cost.
4. The units are capable of translation. LifeMD's platform can translate conversations in a total of 10 languages, according to the report.
